Hither Hill Garden surrounds a two-structure residence in Montauk, NY. NBW worked with the architects and clients from the outset of this project to site both a main house and guest house within lushly planted gardens. In collaboration with the clients and project architects, the two houses were positioned to take advantage of solar aspect, hydrological system patterns, and ocean views. Terraces structured by stone walls extend the living areas from inside to out. Horticultural choices were informed by the local beach and woodland plant communities and include: rugosa rose, goldenrod, and asters in the sunny borders; blueberries and native azaleas under the existing scrub oaks. Responding to topography, the garden exhibits a structured transition from the upper woodland plant communities to a beachscape palette.
