Contemplative Sciences Center at the University of Virginia

Charlottesville, VA
(2019-ongoing)

NBW has teamed up with Aidlin Darling and VMDO Architects on siting, programming, and the design of immersive outdoor spaces for the 64,000 sf Contemplative Sciences building that link it seamlessly to the surrounding campus and to the expansive natural context of the adjacent 11-acre Dell, also designed by NBW. Series of at grade and on structure courtyards and gardens of different scales provide flexible spaces for learning, conversation and contemplation and circulation. Bridges integrated into the structure create an important missing accessible link to the surrounding campus. Through strategic use of native plants, hardscape materials, and site stormwater, the landscape facilitates rich opportunities for immersive experience, while fostering ecological awareness and supporting diverse program requirements.
