| LANGLEY, METROPOLITAN VANCOUVER, BC By invitation of the University of British Columbia Sustainable Communities Initiative, Warren Byrd led a design team to develop a 50-year plan for this suburb approximately 20 miles east of Vancouver. The goal of the charrette was to develop a vision for a vibrant and sustainable community centered around four nodes along the main street of Langley. The plan had to accommodate up to 37,500 new residents in a maximum of 20,800 housing units and provide space that would allow for 22,250 new jobs by 2050. |
DAMASCUS, METROPOLITAN PORTLAND, OR The 1000 Friends of Oregon and Coalition for a Livable Future initiated this design charrette to develop a model for sustainable urbanization in the proposed 25 square mile growth area. NBW led one of three design teams and focused on ecological sustainability. The team was composed of 13 experts: scientists, planners, architects, and public officials. The initial work of the team created a framework for land preservation and development that was then adopted by all three of the charrette teams. The final product was an urban design master plan including neighborhood and block studies, street sections, greenway diagrams, and design principles. These were presented at two public meetings and published in “The Damascus Area Design Workshop: A Regional Model for a Clean, Green, Affordable, and Fair UGB Expansion”. |
SOMERSET, NJ This design charrette examined strategies for managing the future growth of a fragmented and “sprawling” regional center made up of three distinct sub-centers. The plan featured a greenway park system along the banks of the Raritan River, reincorporation of a busy major road of strip malls and disconnected corporate campuses into the urban fabric through creation of a green boulevard, addition of a bike trail circling the entire regional center, and a landfill stormwater retention zone. The plan sought to reconnect the fragmented elements of this urban/suburban center by reinforcing the natural systems of the area. |
VILLAGES AT REPAUPO, NJ The design of the master plan for the Villages at Repaupo is based on the principles of Traditional Neighborhood Design. A town center and four villages comprise the development. Each has a distinct character. Nelson Byrd Woltz was responsible for the master plan design of the landscape including streets, walks, bikeways, parks, greenways, as well as stormwater management. The plan encourages less reliance on automobiles and creates unique places throughout the villages for gathering and recreation. NBW designed a localized system for managing stormwater that creates water amenities and wildlife habitat while eliminating the need for extensive piped systems.
